EURASIP Fellows 2016
In 2007, the EURASIP Board of Directors (BoD) initiated a “Fellowship Programme”, to recognize outstanding achievements of its members and volunteers. Each year, a select group of signal processing researchers are elevated to “EURASIP Fellow”, the Association's most prestigious honour.

It is my pleasure to announce the result of the 2016 selection process. In recognition of their many important contributions to the field of signal processing, the EURASIP BoD elevates the following individuals to “EURASIP Fellow 2016”:

Prof. Petar M. Djurić (Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY, USA) for contributions to the theory and practice of Bayesian signal processing.

Prof. Geert Leus (Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands) for contributions to signal processing for communications.

Prof. Michael Davies (University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK) for contributions to sparse representations in signal processing and compressed sensing.

Prof. Paulo S. R. Diniz (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) for contributions to digital signal processing, adaptive filtering, and communications.

I wish to congratulate our new EURASIP Fellows on this most important achievement. The Fellowship Awards will be presented at EUSIPCO 2016, to be held in Budapest (Hungary), August 29 - September 2, 2016.

Sincerely yours,

Fulvio Gini

EURASIP Awards: Announcement 2016 Society Awards
The European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) congratulates the following colleagues who will receive the Society’s prestigious awards. The awards will be presented at EUSIPCO 2016 in Budapest, Hungary.

This year is the first edition of the Early Career Award, which is to be awarded to an outstanding researcher and engineer working within the technical scope of EURASIP at an early or mid-stage of their career whose current work shows not only significant scientific achievements but also high potential to advance scientific knowledge through novel, timely and significant endeavors. This year’s recipient is Prof. Mads Græsbøll Christensen, “For significant contributions to statistical processing of audio and speech signals”

The Technical Achievement Award honors a person who, over a period of years, has made outstanding technical contributions to theory or practice in technical areas within the scope of the Society, as demonstrated by publications, patents, or recognized impact in this field. On an exceptional basis, this year there are two recipients of this award:
Prof. Mauro Barni, “For contributions to digital watermarking, multimedia security and forensics;”
Prof. Mário A. T. Figueiredo, “For fundamental contributions to optimization algorithms for sparsity-based and wavelet-based signal processing.”

The Meritorious Service Award is given to recognize individuals who have given distinguished service to the Society in the form of significant contributions to the development of EURASIP, distinguished service to the advancement and pursuit of the technical objectives of EURASIP, or active cooperation in actions supported or sponsored by EURASIP. This year’s recipient is Prof. A. G. Constantinides, “For meritorious service at the highest technical level to the Society from the foundation to the present day”.

The Athanasios Papoulis Award is given to honor scientists whose work has had a major impact on various aspects of signal processing education. The award is offered only when there is an exceptional candidate nomination and not on a regular basis. This year’s recipient is Prof. Peter Stoica, “For outstanding contributions to research and education in statistical signal processing, array signal processing, and waveform design”.

PhD Thesis Data Base Invitation
The European Signal Processing Association has created and is maintaining a database of PhD manuscripts at www.eurasip.org, where full-text PhD theses in the area of signal, speech and image processing can be freely posted and downloaded. The PhD thesis database is part of EURASIP's “Open Library”, which also contains a collection of freely downloadable conference proceedings -including all recent EUSIPCO proceedings. We believe that the “Open Library” in general, and the PhD thesis database in particular will be a very valuable source of information, a place where documents can be posted and found that are otherwise typically not well distributed. The database is presently World's largest one in the area of signal processing. The database also keeps tracks of monthly downloads and publishes regularly in its page the 10 top downloaded theses.

Every year a committee of experts nominated by the EURASIP BoD selects up to three theses related to different areas of signal processing to be awarded. The selection process is based on the evaluation of the impact of the theses, their subsequent journal and conference publications and related citations received, and on the review reports of three independent reviewers as well as on the download statistics. The download statistics are instrumental only in forming a short-list of the top 20 theses. In order to select the 20xx best PhD theses, the temporal window of the years 20xx-5 through 20xx-3 is considered. The awards will be presented during the Awards Ceremony at EUSIPCO 20xx. Each award consists of a certificate and of a cash amount of 1K Euros. With this message, we would like to invite you to make PhD theses from your Institute available through our database. We also invite you to forward this invitation to your collaborators and colleagues. To make the PhD thesis database fully representative, we indeed invite everyone who has recently -and not so recently- defended or supervised a PhD thesis in the area of signal, speech and image processing, to post it in our database. PhD manuscripts written in any European language are accepted, when complemented by an abstract written in English.

Summer School on Signal Processing for Next Generation Satellite Communications
The School on Signal Processing for Next Generation Satellite Communications 2016 (SPNGS 2016), which is jointly organized by the Centre Tecnològic de les Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) jointly with the University of Ghent, will take place at University of Ghent from 25 to 27 April 2016 and it is sponsored by the European Space Agency (SatNEx IV project), IEEE Signal Processing Society and EURASIP.

The School is related to the applications, methodological advances and basic theory of signal processing techniques in satellite communications. We plan to touch the current schemes that are implemented in today’s satellite equipment, as well as advanced techniques that will support “Next generation satellite systems”, with a main focus on “HTS: High Throughput Satellite”. This school schedules 6 short courses and 3 keynotes from renowned international professors and industry experts. Most courses will include close-to-real implementation results.

More information about the school (speakers and venue) can be found in: http://satnexivseasonalschool.cttc.es
The registration is now open till April 11th, there is an early bird registration discount till April 1st.
Visit the registration page for more information.

EURASIP Summer School on Robust Signal Processing
Joint IEEE SPS and EURASIP Summer School on Robust Signal Processing Rüdesheim (Rhine), Germany, Sept. 19th-26th 2016

The 2016 Joint IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) and European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) Summer School on Robust Signal Processing is organized by the Signal Processing Group at Technische Universität Darmstadt. We invite Ph.D. students, early career researchers and engineering practitioners to participate in the Summer School, what promises to be a unique event run by world-class experts.

The Summer School provides insights on advances in statistical signal processing with emphasis on robust statistics for signal processing. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and study innovative robust methods and algorithms for signal processing and engineering at large supported by numerous advanced real-life applications. The material will be presented in an interactive and stimulating way: each day, after the lectures, the speakers will be available for face-to-face discussion with the participants who are interested in deepening some of the material covered in the talks. Participants will have also the opportunity to present their own work, if they wish so, and get feedback from other participants as well as from the lecturers.
