Internet over Digital Video Broadcasting Networks

Wednesday, 22 June 2005, 16:00-17:30
Room: Großer Saal
Chair: Dr. Charalabos Skianis, Demokritos, Greece

It is in our days more clear than ever that the average user is a constant micro- or macro- traveller, a nomad moving around the Globe ever hungry for connectivity. In this modern era professionals, academics and researchers are constantly challenged to provide access at any time, for anyone, anywhere in a secure environment and in an invisible way.

The Digital Video Broadcasting technology is proven a strong player in this challenge. Building upon the well established concept of DVB the technology evolves towards the handheld (DVB-H) era using the Internet Protocol technology (IP) as the glue to alternative technologies.

At present manufacturers are building terminals hosting the technology, relative trials with the participation of broadcasters and vendors are taking place around the world, standardization bodies are actively contributing to the concept, researchers and academics are coming up with cutting edge solutions. In addition large pilot projects bring together all the aforementioned entities in the common effort.

A trendy technology at the moment that remains to be largely delivered to the people.
