Goodbye Message of Resigning President |
On January 1st, Ana Perez will be retiring from the EURASIP Board of Directors (BoD) after 8 years of service as a BoD Member/Membership Development Chair and Awards Chair.
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Ana, it has always been a true pleasure to work with her.
I trust Ana will continue to support the Association as an active Advisory Board Member, officially called a "Working Member" (originally, the “Working Members” are those who formally registered
EURASIP in 2006 as a non-profit association under Belgian law, having legal personality.
Their most important task is the approval of the budget and the accounts. All the retiring BoD members automatically become “Working members”).
I myself will now move into the Past-President seat, as a non-voting BoD member, after two terms as President (2013-2014 and 2015-2016).
I am very grateful to my colleagues for being given the opportunity to serve as President. As already announced, Abdelhak Zoubir has been appointed by the current BoD to the position of President.
I wish him a very successful presidency, I fully trust the Associaton will be in good hands!
Since this is my last President’s message, I would like to acknowledge here again the work of my predecessors (Marc Moonen, Markus Rupp, and Sergios Theodoridis)
and by all the BoD members I worked with in the last 10 years. It was a great pleasure and an honor to work with all of them. I also want to thank Giovanni Sicuranza,
a former BoD member who introduced me to EURASIP.
Thanks Giovanni!
Over the last years, EURASIP has introduced some relevant changes, in the attempt to bring our Association's activities and initiatives to a bigger audience and so to increase our visibility,
especially amongst young researchers and PhD students. To this purpose, mid 2014 we launched a program of Seasonal Schools in Signal Processing.
The EURASIP seasonal school program has the goal of providing graduate students, PhD students, and early stage researchers with background on signal processing and its applications.
Since we launched this initiative, a relevant number of Summer/Winter Schools have been organized in Europe with the financial support of EURASIP and they brought us many new members, mostly PhD students.
Less than two years ago, EURASIP also launched the concept of Special Area Teams (SATs). You can read more on this in the EURASIP webpage.
One year ago, we conceived a new award, the EURASIP Early Career Award, which is intended to recognize some of the finest scientist and engineers who are at an early or mid-stage of their career.
Another new activity that we initiated at EUSIPCO 2015 is the 3 Minutes Thesis (3MT) contest, where PhD students had three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its
significance. It is an exercise for students to consolidate their ideas so they can present them concisely to an audience specialized in different signal processing fields.
The winner receives 1500 Euros and a certificate. The contest was organized also at EUSIPCO 2016 in Budapest and will be repeated also at EUSIPCO 2017 in Kos.
In closing, let me remind that next EUSIPCO will be held in the beautiful island of Kos, in Greece. EUSIPCO 2017 is organized under the chairmanship of Petros Maragos and Sergios Theodoridis.
More detailed information about EUSIPCO 2017 is available at www.eusipco2017.org.

Call for new Local Liaisons |
EURASIP is now on the point of renewing the Local Liaison (LL) Board and this message is to invite you to apply to become a LL officer. Among other benefits, EURASIP offers a scientific forum that any member can use to promote different kind of initiatives and LL’s are those who volunteer to propose which kind of initiatives are interesting to be organized. At www.eurasip.org you can find, for instance, the seminar series by outstanding speakers that has been organized by the actual LL’s. In general, a seminar day could be to have one main invited speaker, providing one or two lectures, together with a number of (shorter) lectures provided by local speakers. This has proved to be a successful format, but is merely given as an example here. EURASIP will provide funding for such activities, so that the organizers do not incur large financial risk.
Aside from seminars given by outstanding speakers, among the activities that EURASIP can technically and economically support you can think of:
- Winter or Summer schools;
- PhD Forums or workshops organized by/for PhD students, which promote the transversal competences that are requested in the European Space for Higher Education;
- 3 Minutes Thesis competitions;
- Etc.
EURASIP mainly envisages ’ambitious’ activities, for a fairly large audience (minimum 50) with a formal registration and registration fees. The actual format of these activities is intentionally left largely undefined.
Liaisons are appointed by EURASIP Board of Directors (BoD) and are chosen to best meet the profile of active people within the Signal Processing community. They are in charge not only of coordinating and stimulating local activities, but also of contributing to promote EURASIP at the national level, increasing the response to problems and inviting young collaborators and colleagues to submit their PhD theses. At every EUSIPCO there is a Local Liaison meeting, where we all put in common our ideas.
To apply for LL officer you can contact me or any other BoD member, young collaborators are very welcome. For more information about the Local Liaison Program, how to enrol and to find out who your liaison is in your country, we encourage you to contact me or to visit www.eurasip.org. There you can also find different "Forms of Interest" that clarify the existing procedures.
Also, any comments that you might have about "What do you expect from EURASIP?" are very welcome and can initiate some nice discussions.
